If your baby’s first birthday is coming up soon, you’ve probably heard other parents mention booking a cake smash session — but what exactly is cake smash photography, and why is it so popular with families here in Houston?

Let’s break it down so you know exactly what to expect, why it’s so much fun, and how I make these sessions stress-free and memorable for you and your little one.

🎉 What Is a Cake Smash Photography Session?
A cake smash photography session is a playful, joyful photo shoot designed to celebrate your baby’s first birthday. It’s exactly what it sounds like: your little one gets to explore, taste, and smash a cake — while I capture every sweet, messy moment and giggle.

It’s a modern tradition that more and more Houston families are loving. These adorable images are perfect for birthday party invitations, keepsake albums, or just to remember this fleeting milestone forever.

🍰 What’s Included in My Cake Smash Sessions
At Irene Womac Photography, my cake smash sessions are more than just smashing a cake — they’re a full first birthday experience! Here’s what you can expect when you book with me:

  • Custom Themed Setup
Together, we plan a beautiful backdrop that matches your baby’s personality or your chosen theme — from simple and timeless to colorful and whimsical.
  • The Cake Smash Moment
Your baby gets to dig in, taste, poke, and smear frosting to their heart’s content — I photograph every adorable reaction, from shy curiosity to full-on cake destruction!
  • Bubble Bath Fun
After the smash, your little one gets to “take a bubble bath” in a cute, tiny tub — this makes for even more precious photos.
  • Extra Backdrops & Outfit Changes
I love giving families extra variety. We’ll use additional, non-themed backdrops with a couple of outfit changes. I have a selection of sweet outfits at my studio, and you’re always welcome to bring favorites from home too.
  • Optional Family Photos
Want to jump in for a few family portraits? Absolutely — just let me know, and we’ll capture beautiful images of you all together to mark this special day.

How Long Does a Cake Smash Session Take?
Sessions typically last about 45–60 minutes — the perfect amount of time to keep your baby happy and engaged, without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

When Should I Book a Cake Smash Session?
Most Houston families book their cake smash about 4–6 weeks before the baby’s first birthday, so there’s plenty of time to edit your photos and use them for invitations or decorations.

Babies usually do best when they’re 11–12 months old — old enough to sit up securely, curious about new textures, and ready to have some messy fun!

What Do Parents Need to Bring?

Just a couple of things — I make the rest easy for you!

✔️ The Cake – You’ll bring your baby’s cake, so you can choose the flavors, colors, or bakery you love most.
✔️ Outfits – Feel free to bring 1–2 outfits for your baby. I also have a sweet selection in the studio you’re welcome to use.

I’ll take care of the themed setup, props, bubble bath, and clean-up — so you can simply relax and enjoy the experience!

All you need to bring is your baby and a sense of fun — I take care of the rest so you can relax and enjoy the moment.
